Rangeland News May 2025

It has been a fine, mostly cool springtime on the ranch. The pasture grass is knee high, even waist deep in spots. Purple vetch is curling up through the verdure and topping the fence wires. The vineyard canes are shooting up and ready to bloom. We have dozens of new calves in the field. After 25 years here, the annual rebirth is still astonishing.

Ultramafic Merlot Special

Our merlot is planted on serpentine rock seams and outcrops. This tough, high magnesium dirt is called ultramafic by the soil geeks. Serpentine soil is a daunting environment for most plants, including grapevines. The resulting fruit, ripened in Paso Robles' abundant sunshine, is opulent and complex. Our 2021 Ultramafic Merlot (75%) is blended with Petit Verdot (13%), Cabernet (6%) and Cab Franc (6%), for added depth and nuance. Here are the tasting notes:

Our 2021 Rangeland Ultramafic evokes cocoa, roasted walnut, and cherry blossom on the nose. These heady aromas introduce a richly finished palate of crushed strawberry, cardamom, and black cherry. Try this wine with a grilled pork chop and roasted sweet potatoes.

We are offering this newly released wine at a special price of $399 for a 12 bottle case, just $33.25 per bottle before your large club discount, shipping included. Or order 6 bottles for $240, $40 per bottle, before club discounts. Order here.
